My AGS-101 generally works perfectly fine and will happily charge – but squeezing the unit occasionally causes the system to switch off or reset, and the power light sometimes flickers from green to red.

I have the two batteries side-by-side and here is what I can see: - The model number is the same (AGS-003) - The amperage is the same (600mAh) - The voltage for the AGS-001 battery is 3.7 volts and the AGS-101 battery is 3.8 volts. Your mileage may vary depending on if you get a backlit (AGS-101) or a frontlit (AGS-001), but its still the same GBA SP you probably played as a kid (if you grew up in the early 2000s, that is). Overall, good purchase, if the seller has other old consoles like this one, I may have to dip in and see.

It can be done. You need to purchase a specific adapter for the 001 lcd ribbon cable adapter (not the 101 adapter) and you'll need a tiny bit of soldering and some removing parts from the inside of the shell. Alternatively you can replace the shoulder buttons on your sp, which also requires a bit of soldering. Edit: here's a thread on the 001 mod.
Yes AGS-101 is a backlit SP. Easy to identify model not too scarce in America. Astounding brightness level change over AGS-001. Must be seen to truly appreciate. Key benefit is for Metroid Zero Mission or similar dark background games. Let alone the maligned infamous AGB-001 Backlit SP should be on par with DS Lite, original SP comparable to DS.
